2022 1 OZ. $50 Gold Buffalo NGC MS70 FDI Michael Castle Signature

This 2022 American Gold Buffalo coin is minted from one-ounce of pure 24-karat gold and features the iconic Buffalo Indian head design by James Earle Fraser, that appeared on the Buffalo nickel struck by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938. Fraser was born in Minnesota in 1876 and raised in South Dakota where has was exposed to frontier life and the experience of Native Americans, he created his design intending that it would never be mistaken as anything but an American coin. His initial F for Fraser appears on the obverse of the coin below the date.

The magnificent Native American depiction on the coins obverse is believed to be based on three different American Indians. Two of the American Indians who modeled for Fraser as he sculpted the coin were named by the designer before his death. They were Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. Although many have claimed to have had a sitting with Fraser for this design, he could not recall the name of the third person, and satisfactory documentation has not yet been found to identify that individual. It is widely believed that the bison on the coin's reverse was modeled after Black Diamond, a popular attraction at the New York Zoological Gardens.

This coin also has the coveted First Day of Issue designation and is individually hand-signed by Michael Castle, the Coinage Congressman, who sponsored Public Law 109-145, dated December 22, 2005, that authorized production of the Buffalo gold coin series, Americas first-ever coins minted in pure 24-karat gold in 2006. The Honorable Michael Castle was a two-term Governor of Delaware and near twenty-year member of the US House of Representatives and is directly responsible for some of the most important and popular modern U.S. coins. While in Congress, he wrote and/or sponsored the bills that created this coin, Platinum Eagles, 50 State Quarters Program, the Presidential Dollar Series, and many others.
