About these coins

At the end of each year’s production, the U.S. Mint usually collects all of its unsold Silver Eagle coins bearing the “W” for WestPoint mintmark, removes them from their packaging, and melts them down. We say “usually” because in 2019 the Mint discovered it had some leftover stock of Silver Eagles dated 2016, 2017, and 2018. Rather than melt them, the Mint made a surprise move and sold them to a buyer in a private auction.

The coins that escaped the melting pot, have been designated “West Point Mint Private Auction”. This designation gives the coins a desirable and rare provenance not seen since the famed Government Services Administration (GSA) Morgan Dollar hoard in 1972!

Condition

Coins are graded on a 70-point basis with 70 being absolute perfection. These coins have the desirable extra notation “WestPoint Mint Private Auction” and include the rare 2018 W Burnished Silver Eagle. All three coins have been signed by Paul C. Balan, one of the most prolific U.S. Mint artist engravers. His 15 design credits include the spectacular 2015 $100 High Relief gold coin, America’s first-ever gold coin to have a $100 denomination.
