1999 W $10 Gold Eagle NGC MS70 W/ Unfinished Dies - Major Mint Error/Die Variety Coin - Anna Cabral Signature
About this coin
Together with the 1999 W $5, this is the only major mint error/die variety coin in the American Gold Eagle Series. This coin has a bullion strike on an unpolished proof die with W mintmark. Due to the method of manufacture very few of these coins have ever been certified in perfect MS70 condition. There was a tenfold increase in demand for gold coins in 1999 due to uncertainty surrounding Y2K, and people’s fears that computers would crash because their clocks could not support the year “2000”. In a rush to meet the demand, the US Mint inadvertently mixed a proof die into service resulting in striking a bullion coin with a “W” for West Point mintmark on unpolished dies.
