This significant 1986 First Year of Issue $50 American Gold Eagle proof strike coin was minted at the West Point Mint. Proof strike refers to the method of manufacture and not the condition of a coin. Proof coins are the highest quality coins produced by the U.S. Mint. This piece is one of the original coins signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1985 that started the series.

Proudly displaying the original “Family of Eagles” design by Miley Frost, a special design feature is the date 1986, is displayed in Roman Numerals. (MCMXXXVI). Only coins produced from 1986 – 1991 had their date displayed in Roman Numerals. This coin is certified in flawless PF70 condition by NGC, which is a very difficult grade to obtain on coins produced thirty-seven years ago when minting technology was not as advanced as it is today!

From a mintage of 446,290 coins, NGC has only certified 4,747 of them in perfect PF70 condition, the highest numismatic grade any coin can achieve. This coin has the notation First Year of Issue on its holder, in coin collecting “Firsts” are always the coins collectors look for. Better still, it has the genuine hand signature of Miley Frost Busiek, the designer of the coin. Her initials are engraved on the coin. This special signature feature is like buying a piece of art that is signed by the artist, you have original signed art by the person who designed it, which makes it so much more special and intriguing to the collector.
