1889 CC Morgan Dollar NGC MS62 DPL – Key date
Carson City coinage, with its “CC” mint mark, is especially coveted by collectors. There are only thirteen coins in the Morgan Dollar Carson City series. This 1889 coin is the key date in the series. Only 350,000 coins were minted in 1889 at Carson City versus 21,726,000 coins at Philadelphia and 657,000 at the San Francisco Mint. This coin is rare in any state of preservation. This coin has been certified in MS62 DPL condition BY NGC. In addition to the numeric grade of a coin, graders follow the numeric grade with a designation, often called a "Strike Character." This coin has been awarded the desirable Deep Proof-Like (DPL) designation. When a circulation issue coin’s fields, (Any flat area of the coin that hasn't been raised off of the coin during the striking process) exhibit a higher-than-normal degree of reflectivity, the coin is considered Proof-like, because it is reminiscent of a Proof coin. If the fields are deeply mirrored, the coin is said to be Deep Proof-like or DPL. These designations indicate only the degree of reflectivity evident in a coin’s fields and make no implication as to other qualities associated with Proof coins, such as frosted devices and superior sharpness.
