2017 (2020) W SILVER EAGLE WEST POINT MINT HOARD NGC PF70 MERCANTI

About this coin

This coin has an impressive collectible resumé and is one of the best values in the American Silver Eagle series which is replete with special dates, mintmarks, strikes and finishes. This 2017 Silver Eagle Proof coin struck at the West Point Mint is rare but incredibly priced. We showcase it in perfect PR70 condition certified by NGC. The coin has a desirable West Point Mint Hoard provenance, 2017 is a key date paying homage to the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Mint and the coin is signed by John Mercanti, the twelfth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint and the designer of the beloved Heraldic Eagle that has adorned each coin since its debut in 1986.

At the end of each year’s production, the U.S. Mint usually collects all of its unsold Silver eagle-proof coins, removes them from their packaging, and melts them down. We say “usually” because in 2019 the Mint discovered it had some leftover stock of 2017 proof coins. Rather than melt them the Mint made a surprise move and sold them to a buyer in a closed bid sale.

These coins that escaped the melting pot soon found their way to NGC who designated them West Point Mint Hoard. The special hoard designation, the only hoard designation in the entire series, gives these coins a rare and desirable provenance not seen since the famed Government Services Administration (GSA) Morgan dollar hoard of 1972! We showcase these important coins in perfect PR70 condition. Their collectible value is further enhanced because they have been signed by their designer, John Mercanti. This coin is certain to be an heirloom that you and your family will treasure and enjoy for years to come.

Condition

Coins are graded on a 70-point scale with 70 being absolute perfection! In addition to the perfect 70 grade, This coin has been signed by John Mercanti, the twelfth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint who designed the iconic Heraldic Eagle that has appeared on every Silver Eagle coin since its debut in 1986! John Mercanti is one of the most recognizable names in all of numismatics, with one hundred design credits at the U.S. Mint, more than anyone else in history!
